What Can (and Can't) Go in a Dumpster in Texas

Most of what comes out of a home renovation, cleanout or construction job is completely fine in a standard roll-off. But Texas, like every state, restricts a specific list of materials from ordinary landfill disposal, and putting the wrong thing in a dumpster can mean extra sorting fees or a delayed pickup. Here's the plain-English version of what's allowed and what isn't.

What's generally fine in a mixed load

• Furniture, mattresses and household junk
• Wood, lumber and framing offcuts
• Drywall and flooring
• Carpet and padding
• Roofing shingles (weight-limited — see our roofing sizing guide)
• Cardboard and packaging
• Yard debris — branches, brush, leaves, trimmings
• Small appliances without refrigerant
• General household clutter — boxes, clothing, toys

What's banned from a standard dumpster

TCEQ (the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) restricts these materials from ordinary landfill disposal, and none of them can go in one of our containers:

• Paint, solvents and oils (liquid form)
• Motor oil, antifreeze and other automotive fluids
• Tires
• Car batteries and household batteries in bulk
• Propane tanks and pressurized gas cylinders
• Medical and biohazard waste
• Asbestos-containing material
• Refrigerant-containing appliances (refrigerators, freezers, some AC units) — need refrigerant professionally recovered first

A note on paint specifically

This one trips people up constantly: wet or liquid paint of any kind cannot go in a dumpster. Latex paint, once it's fully dried out solid (mixing in cat litter or a commercial hardener speeds this up in Texas heat), can go in as solid waste. Oil-based paint and any paint that's still liquid needs to go to a household hazardous waste collection instead.

Appliances and refrigerant

Small appliances — microwaves, toasters, small electronics — are fine in a standard load. Anything that holds refrigerant, including refrigerators, freezers, window units and some portable AC units, needs that refrigerant professionally recovered before it can go to a landfill. Set those aside and mention them when you book; we can point you to the right disposal path.

Concrete, brick and heavy inert material

Concrete, brick, block, asphalt and fill dirt are technically allowed but need to go in a dedicated, clean single-material load — usually a smaller 10 or 15 yard container with its own weight structure. This comes up constantly with renovation work in Conroe's older neighborhoods and new-construction growth along I-45 — poured footings, block debris and excavated fill dirt are a routine part of the workload. Mixing heavy inert material into a general household load caps the container's usable weight almost immediately, and keeping it separate means it can often be recycled rather than landfilled.

Electronics

Texas has specific e-waste rules for TVs, computers and monitors — these generally can't go in a standard dumpster or curbside trash. Most cities and retailers offer e-waste drop-off; check with your city's public works office or a local electronics retailer.

What happens if a banned item ends up in the container anyway

If our driver spots a banned item during pickup, we'll sort it out and let you know, and there's typically a handling charge if the material requires special disposal. We'd genuinely rather you call and ask first — it costs nothing and takes thirty seconds, and it saves everyone a complication at pickup.

When in doubt, ask before you load it

This list covers the items that come up most often, but if you're holding something unusual — old chemicals from a garage cleanout, a fire extinguisher, something you genuinely can't identify — call us before it goes in.
